Located in a picturesque mountain valley lies this thoughtfully designed yurt home. The front door opens into the kitchen and living space with the original schist terrace stairs leading up to the second story which includes the bathroom, laundry area and storage space. Three more steps lead up to the yurt platform which is an open bedroom area with breath-taking views of the valley. This home was built into the ancient terrace to use the thermal mass which very effectively maintains a comfortable indoor temperature year round. The near panoramic windows on the first floor allow for some solar gain in the winter months as well. This property has a phenomenal amount of sun exposure year round. The home was designed to allow for comfortable off grid living without compromising on modern amenities. The robust solar system (which is also backed up by a very efficient diesel generator) allows for automated water pumping and irrigation with the simple flick of a switch from the constant year round mountain stream into 2000l of water storage which is then filtered and pressure boosted by an automatic pump system. The home also features a large refrigerator, washing machine, and a.c. lighting with many power outlets throughout.

Land with nearly 5,000m2 (according to documents, however it is very clear that that is an undervaluation.) In front of the yurt are the many terraces with plenty of room and opportunity for lush gardens. The bottom two terraces are very large and would be ideal for temporary structures such as a bell tent or additional yurt. The property reaches all the way to the bottom of the valley where a year round river flows and a waterfall and small pool make for a perfect spot to cool down in the warm summer months.

A pathway in front of the quinta leads directly to the beautiful mountain village of Benfeita, featuring a wonderful river beach and cafe. It is a beautiful 10 minute walk to the village and the new alternative school is also a 15 minute walk from the home. Nearby are the town’s of Coja, Arganil, and Tabua which feature weekly and monthly outdoor markets as well as supermarkets and most other amenities needed.

We have not had the opportunity to complete this home to it’s full potential so some work still needs to be done. The plumbing and tank have been set up for a composting worm septic tank system simply add the worms and compost and it’s done. The outdoor shower can be used year round thanks to the great hot water system, but a space inside has been reserved for a bath which has not yet been installed. We envisioned a large concrete bathtub for the space but a clawfoot tub would be a quick and easy way to finish the space. The yurt has large sturdy beams in place for a second story deck to be built which would take advantage of the spectacular views and make this home even more unique and magical.
