Property Description

Quinta Serrana is a true gem. Rural surroundings, yet close to the amazing city of Lisbon. Located at the bottom of a valley, it is mostly flat, fertile and has an abundance of water. It is the perfect place to start a permaculture / ecological project. There is permission to build a house and as a bonus, there is a huge tipi present.

There are 4 structures on the land. One structure is a 10m x 4m metal agricultural shed with cement foundations. It has a workbench, indoor toilet and outdoor sink installed. These facilities are currently not hooked up to running water, but can easily be connected to the well.

The second structure is a 40m2 chicken coop with cement foundations. Although it is designed to house chickens, the city recognizes it as a structure for habitation. Therefore, there is potential to expand this structure for permanent residential purposes. It has an overview over almost the entire property.

The third structure is a 2m x 3m wooden shed with overhanging roof.

The final structure is a large tipi (10m diameter = 88m2) Standing at 10 meters tall, this stunning home complements the peaks of the surrounding hills. The tipi was built from 23 locally harvested eucalyptus trees. It contains several different indoor spaces, including a straw bale insulated room, a rocket mass heater, a loft, kitchen island with a gas stove. It is hooked up to electricity and can easily have internet. There is a possibility of running water, if a pump is installed at the well – pipes are already there. With some love and attention, the tipi is suitable for rustic living.

The land is 1.7ha in size. The highest point of the quinta is inhabited by 50 mature cork trees, providing a shady forest habitat for many birds. The rest of the land is flat; a perfect opportunity for starting an agricultural project. Bordering the northern edge of the property runs a cool stream with ample running water during all four seasons. On the opposite side of the quinta we have a grove of bamboo, which can be used as a sustainable building resource. The entire quinta boasts beautiful views and receives excellent sun exposure.

The quinta has a well with year-round fresh water. Electricity is hooked up and ready to go. Internet cables were installed last year throughout the property. The internet and cable services are available through Meo. The quinta is accessible by a paved road and it has a parking area that can hold 10 cars. The quinta is contained on all sides by water, fences, and rock walls, so you can easily keep grazing animals inside the property. We have many fruit trees! The established edible perennials include 6 orange/tangerine trees of different varieties, a lemon tree, 3 dióspiro trees, a walnut tree, a marmelo tree, 5 medronho trees, 1 apple tree, 3 pear trees of different varieties, 3 fig trees, and blackberries. We also have several young trees including gingeira and almond. The plot came to be called ‘Horta’ (garden) by the locals because of its fertile soil and abundance of water.

There is abundant wildlife on our land. Keep an eye out for foxes, badgers, rabbits, birds, and javalis!

The quinta is located 1 minute from the lovely village of Cachoeiras. From the centre of this traditional Portuguese town, you can see stunning vistas across the valleys to the west. The town also has several cafes, a church, and free hot-water showers and toilets. If you enjoy horses, there are two equestrian centres in town. We often see horses strolling past the quinta. In the valley there are only a handful of houses, only 1 of which is directly adjacent to the plot.

We are located in a stunning valley on the outskirts of Cachoeiras, 30 minutes north of Lisbon.

The bustling city of Vila Franca de Xira lies 10 minutes away. Here you can go shopping, buy groceries, eat at restaurants and catch the train into Lisbon (30 min). In other directions, you can go to the lovely Arruda dos Vinhos (10 min) and Carregado (10 min).
