Property Description

beautiful schist, off-grid home, which sits in a valley between the villages of Benfeita and Pardieiros, has been lovingly renovated by a professional carpenter.
Consisting of three large rooms – kitchen, living space and a bedroom, as well as one small mezzanine sleeping space, the house is perfect for a couple or small family looking to live close to nature and make the most of the lively community of like-minded people living nearby.
It is already equipped with all the essentials for off-grid living – an aga-style woodburner with a backboiler in the kitchen, which provides hot water in the cooler part of the year and a solar hot water system for the summer months. There is also a beautiful bath and a compost toilet.
The house is surrounded by schist steps and two flat terraces for outdoor living, just outside the front and back doors (one small and one larger area suitable for eating outdoors).
In addition to this main house is a smaller schist ruin which has not yet been renovated, again with three rooms and set alongside beautiful terraces of olive trees overlooking the river below.
Both properties are accessible by the same track, which is only passable with a 4X4 vehicle. The other option would be to park up on the road and walk down to the house, which is not too long of a walk.
The properties come with around 2ha of land – one long, wide lower terrace which adjoins the river and is partly shaded by chestnut trees. Here there are a number of nut trees – walnut, almond and hazel (mostly planted between 5 and 8 years ago), along with mature elder and bay trees.
The next terrace up has been home to a vegetable garden over a period of 7 years and has been fed with all the good stuff – nettles, comfrey, seaweed etc. On this terrace there are also a few young lemon and tangerine trees and some raspberry and blueberry plants. Just a bit higher up on its own small terrace sits a mature cherry tree.
There is also some steeper land surrounding the track, which has recently been re-planted with over 100 young trees, including chestnuts, oak, cork oak and medronhos (the strawberry tree).
The properties are close to Fraga de Pena waterfall and there are cafes in the both Benfeita and Pardieiros, meaning social life is just a short distance away. There are also often get-togethers in the valley itself, with several families living just a short walk away. There is also a children’s adventure playground, created by valley residents on a shady terrace near the river. The community’s natural education project, Folha Verde, where 34 children come together to learn and play in nature is at the other end of the valley.
