Property Description

Tapada do Barreiro is a very private and tranquil 3 bedroomed farmhouse set on a hillside amongst cork and olive trees with 4 hectares (10 acres) of fertile fields and rocky outcrops and with direct access to walk on the Lobo mountain.

Tapada has 3 double bedrooms, an upstairs sitting room with log burner, tv, telephone and internet, and downstairs a hall, bathroom, as well as a sitting, eating and kitchen area opening out onto a large patio with huge views over the Alentejo, from where you can watch glorious sunsets.

The house has been renovated retaining much of its original character. Adjoining is a bread oven with plenty of space for a workshop and storing logs.

There is a constant water spring which provides water for the house, dip pool and irrigation. There is also a well, and a water bore which produces about 5,000 litres an hour for irrigation.

Tapada has 390 cork trees scattered over the property as well as 200 olive trees producing olive oil. The fields are at present used as pasture for sheep and goats, and can be used for fruit and vegetable production.

Tapada is very private and tranquil, yet only 5 minutes walk to the village of Carreiras with a café and small shop and excellent bakery.  The attractive castle town of Castelo de Vide is 5km away and has various restaurants and cafés, and there is a Pingo Doce supermarket. 10km from Portalegre with shops and supermarkets and a well preserved 17th century centre. 6km to the amazing cragtop castle village of Marvão. Just across the frontier in Spain you have the town of Valencia de Alcantara, and spectacular places like Alcantara, Caceres, Trujillo and Merida.

Tapada is in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park famed for its scenery of valleys and wooded hills, pretty villages, wildlife and birdlife. There is wonderful walking in the hills and local tracks, including the beautiful medieval paved track from Carreiras to Castelo de Vide. It has many species of birds nesting and flying over. The quiet local roads are ideal for cycling. There are excellent riding stables for riding and trekking close to Castelo de Vide.

Tapada has been used as a second home by the owners as well as for letting. The nearest airport is Lisbon, with about a 2.5 hour drive on good roads to Carreiras. The Santander ferry to Plymouth or Portsmouth is a 7 hour drive away.
