Quinta de Santa Bárbara is a historical manor house and farm whose origins remount to the 15th century. An estate and building of great historical value, its owners through time have shaped in different ways the Quinta that we see today, having had famous guests and inhabitants walk its

grounds. Built at the peak of the former Portuguese empire, the construction of the first buildings – then going by the name Quinta do Payo – began in 1490 by the landlady of those lands, D.

Guiomar de Freire. By inheritance, it afterwords belonged to her grandson D. Francisco Sampayo e Mello, a Portuguese nobleman and then-governor of Malacca and a close friend of Luiz Vaz de Camões, and who is believed to have hosted the famous poet at his estate many times. By the 17th century, as a consequence of the landlady’s piousness, the Quinta was donated to the Catholic Church and by the 18th century, it was transformed into a Jesuit Monastery. The actions of the Jesuits profoundly shaped the Quinta into the form that we see today, the monks having made many restorations and build the Quinta’s precious 18th century chapel.

The current owner, a lover of antiques and restorations, bought the Quinta in the 1970’s and carefully restored the several original houses that compose the property, adapting it for rural tourism.
