Elderberry Syrup Recipe

I have made elderberry syrup around this time of year for nearly a decade, over the years I have tweaked the recipe to my liking, making it slightly sweeter in recent years to suit the taste of the little people in my life too. You also can play around with the recipe adding some things or taking out others, you don’t have to use cloves and cinnamon but I add it for flavour and medicinal value. Before I start, ...Read more

Cressida’s House

Cressida, or Cress for short, featured in a recent episode of House Hunters International in which she purchased a property advertised through Pure Portugal.  At the beginning of 2016, Cress left behind her life in London and a corporate job in finance, as she felt it lacked any true purpose. After volunteering in Chile and learning more about permaculture practices she came back to Europe and found herself in Portugal. The landscape reminded her of her childhood home in ...Read more

Q&A With One Of Pure Portugal’s Longest Standing Sales Agents

As part of our Pure Portugal Past & Present 14th Birthday Celebrations we decided it would be nice to interview one of the agents who has been advertising their property for sale with Pure Portugal since the early days. See their featured property for sale here  What were you doing before you started selling properties?  We’ve always had our own smallholding producing about 95% of our own food so there was never any lack of work. Over the years we’ve ...Read more

Joana sharing her love for her job and the countryside

Pure Portugal – What I love about this job I have joined the Pure Portugal Team in june 2015. The job wasn’t completely new to me as in the past 8 years I was helping my father with his business of Buying & Selling Properties. During that time I gained experience dealing with clients, some knowledge regarding the property buying & selling process, and an overview of the business. During those years I also become passionate about rural properties, the ...Read more

Bees and Bee Keeping Course

The bees have arrived at Quinta dos Covões! I didn’t know they were here until I heard a knock at the door and opened it to find Harald there holding out a bee keeper’s suit for me and saying “Do you want to come and watch me open the hives up?”. So off we went, suited up, to release the bees! I know very little about bees other than they’re entirely fascinating and I really want them on the quinta and ...Read more

Olive Pruning and Wall Repairing

There’s lots of work going on here at Quinta dos Covões this month. There are a couple of fantastic local guys here pruning the very overgrown olive trees to get them back into production. Also there’s a digger and two men repairing the tallest wall that suffered a collapse at some point in the past.  The bee hives are going to be installed on the terrace immediately above the newly-repaired wall, just in time for the Monthly Bee Keeping Course with Harald ...Read more

Rocket Stove

Nice and comfy, nested on the heated sofa-bench… The house is warm, the water hot, and the stove gently crackling as it finishes hits burn for the day. Temperature meant to go down to 1°C tonight. Right now it’s 4.7°C out there, but 20.2°C in here. Our rocket stove is now in its second week of its second season. Only 2 blow backs so far ; once after I rushed putting a big log in shortly after starting it, the ...Read more

FREE TREES: Kim & Nick

Kim and Nick are the latest recipients of free trees for their property purchased via Pure Portugal.    We are both in our early 30’s and seem to have different dreams than our friends of the same age, we didn’t want to be stuck in our home country, Belgium, in a life full of stress, work and little time for each other. A couple of years ago we sold our house in Belgium and started travelling, we went to Southeast Asia, ...Read more

Stuck up an Olive Tree…

Here is the proof that I can still climb trees! ….. Although I never expected to be putting this childhood talent into practice for 3 days of Olive Harvesting! My Inner child was very happy to have a “grown up” excuse to climb ladders and balance on tree branches, as I was determined to reach all of the Olives that were way out of my reach! It was great to be out doors all day and have lunch cooked on an ...Read more

Courgette Saturday!

There is nothing quite like the feeling of abundance as we move into August here in Central Portugal. Nature never ceases to show us her abundance every day, in the form of our gardens. Whether large or small, permaculture style or more standard, with a little care in the form of water, a handful of estrume(manure) here and there, and with the added force of the portuguese summer sun, the earth cannot fail to produce gluts in many forms. I ...Read more

O Meu Jardim

This year I’ve been learning more about gardening – or learning how much I’ve already learnt about gardening here in Portugal. I’ve learnt that I have a compulstion to create gardens wherever I go, which has meant that in the last 18 months I’ve made gardens in five locations. The garden I have now is at Quinta da Forja, and although it’s tiny in comparison to the garden I had at Quinta das Abelhas, it’s giving plenty of produce – every day I’m ...Read more

Quinta das Cabras – Goat herding in the Serra da Estrela

For those of you who already know me, a lot of my day at present is taken up with goats. Our quinta, formerly known as Quinta do Tropo (Tropo is the name of the land around), recently renamed Quinta das Cabras (Quinta of the Goats), is in Linhares da Beira, Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Central Portugal. I found this piece of paradise three years ago via Pure Portugal, it being only the second property I looked at in Portugal. ...Read more
