This is Where I Live (Inês)

I live in the North of Portugal in a small fishermen town by the river and the sea. I can leave house and walk ten minutes to the beach. I arrive two years ago to this village situated in the greenest region of Portugal: Minho. Crossing a bridge, there is a nice and pleasent city named Esposende. Like several other rural, agricultural and fishing towns, desertification and unemployment are issues that the populations have to face. People prefer to live ...Read more

Quinta da Moenda – Sustainable Tourism

Yesterday Fran and I visited one of the properties we have advertised for sale on Pure Portugal. It’s always interesting to see the properties “in the flesh” and it also helps us to more easily match our clients with their perfect property. Quinta da Moenda is a 1.6 hectare riverside tourism complex with private home and 5 self-catering apartments, swimming pool and sauna. The current property dates from circa 1779, when it was used as an olive oil mill – but it has much older origins ...Read more

A Passion for Portugal

Although he drives me crazy at times, I totally lucked out when I fell in love with a Portuguese man who is passionately in love with this/his incredible country, who knows many of its secret and most beautiful places, and who wants to share them with me. Just when I think there can’t  possibly be any new ones for me to discover, least of all close to home, he takes me on a short drive and just as the sun is beginning to set we walk across some fields and ...Read more

Super Wednesday

Every Wednesday Fran and I work together at the Pure Portugal office in the Freixo house.  Fran has nicknamed this “Super Wednesday!” and as well as getting a lot of work done, we also have a lot of fun 🙂  If we’re feeling a bit sluggish, we get ourselves going by jumping around to music, one of our favourites being from a breath workshop we both attended, Gloria Gaynor’s “I am what I am” or we’ll do some yoga / ...Read more

The Power of Josticks

Yesterday I bought a packet of josticks from “Hiper China” in Gouveia (there are many chinese shops in Portugal, yet few Chinese restaurants – go figure). I chose them because I liked the smell, but on closer inspection the packet told me that burning them will attract money 🙂  I haven’t even taken them out of the car and into the office yet but today we have 3 properties that are now in the process of being sold, and I’ve just had ...Read more

Quinta das Cabras – Goat herding in the Serra da Estrela

For those of you who already know me, a lot of my day at present is taken up with goats. Our quinta, formerly known as Quinta do Tropo (Tropo is the name of the land around), recently renamed Quinta das Cabras (Quinta of the Goats), is in Linhares da Beira, Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Central Portugal. I found this piece of paradise three years ago via Pure Portugal, it being only the second property I looked at in Portugal. ...Read more

This is Where I Live (Sophie)

I live in a traditional stone mountain house in the Serra da Estrela, surrounded by ancient chestnut forest.  We moved here in November and I’ve fallen in love with these mountains. At 850m altitude, we have some pretty spectacular views. We can see to the Caramulo mountains in the distance, and the sunsets are amazing.  The quinta was abandoned for 4 years before we bought it, and the wonderful 86 year old lady who lived here alone before that hadn’t been able ...Read more

New Pure Portugal Office

We’re finally – after 4 temporary office moves in the last 15 months – settled into our new office! Some of us living locally on off-grid quintas have rented a house in the village to use as a base where we have some shared infrastructure such as a washing machine (this means we don’t each have to have our own!), a massage / therapy room, a further room where Fran teaches yoga on Saturday mornings, and the Pure Portugal office. ...Read more

ABM Restaurant Birthday Party

We’re regulars at the ABM Restaurant in São Paio, Gouveia – it’s one of my favourites. The staff are friendly and the food is always good. Today they celebrated 22 years with a “sardinhada” – a barbecue with grilled sardines, potatoes, sweet peppers and onions, which is delicious. Accompanied by traditional Portuguese guitar music and dancing. Afterwards there was champagne and birthday cake!   Find Restaurant ABM on facebook ...Read more

Licor de Ginja / Ginjinha

We have lots and lots of cherry and ginja (wild cherry) trees here on the quinta, so as well as stuffing ourselves straight from the tree for breakfast and “sobremesa”, I collected ginjas to make the traditional licor which I use in the winter warmed up as a cure (or at least a comfort) for colds and flu (not that I get too many living a much healthier life here in the mountains). Ginjas are smaller and more acidic than ...Read more
