Landrover Adventures in the Snow…

Last week saw us welcoming the first visitors of the New Year to Quinta da Estrela… As the first snows had fallen at the Torre and the sun had popped out for the day, I took the opportunity to pile everyone in my Landover for a tour of my favourite tourist spots in the Serra da Estrela.

TorreTorre Mountain The highest peak on the mainland of Portugal and the second highest peak of the ‘complete’ country. With its 1993 meters in altitude, it just fails the 2000 meter barrier. Dom João VI was therefore unsatisfied with its height, and built a tower here in the early 19th century in order to extend the mountain to a more acceptable2000 meters! Here we treated ourselves to some of the local specialities of cured ham and sheep’s cheese along with fresh bread for our picnic lunch. And of course my guests had to buy some of the local liquors to warm ourselves from the inside out!

Monument of Our Lady of Good Star  Close to the Torre we found a sculpture, in the rock, that dates back to 1946 and is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Star, the patron saint of shepherds. The small waterfall and stream flowing at her feet creates the feeling of a fairy grotto.

00008103 - CopyCovão d’Ametade I have recently discovered this stunning location which is the source point of the River Zezere. Surrounded by the magnificence and grandeur of the granite outcrops the area has been planted with many birch trees along the river banks.

00008358Manteigas village is situated about 700m above sea level, on the glacier valley of Serra da Estrela. Here you will find a unique natural beauty and stunning cloud formations.

00008455Vale do Rossim Once we had driven up the steep hills out of Manteigas, we stopped for our picnic lunch. It was a bit too chilly for swimming at this time of the year. But usually small paddle boats and canoes can be hired here to explore the lake during the warmer months.

20160111_130946Folgosinho is a small village with a unique tower built on a hill made of Rose Quartz. This is a  great place to sit and watch the sunset whilst admiring the panoramic view at the end of an exciting day of exploring!
