This pretty, traditional Alentejo blue and white-washed cottage, is situated in a peaceful, private location within the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park; a beautiful sweeping hilly landscape of cork oaks, sweet chestnuts, vineyards and olive trees, in Northern Alentejo.

The cottage itself is a ten-minute walk from a friendly village with yearly Festa and small bar, and a ten-minute drive to the larger hilltop village of Alegrete, with beautiful castle, small supermarkets, Post Office, plentiful bars, infant school and swimming pool. The bustling large town of Portalegre is 25 mins drive with all usual big amenities and the historic Marvao and Castelo de Vide are both a 40 min drive. A mobile shop van, green grocer and bread van all come to the gate each week.

The cottage itself is completely gated and fenced (low stone wall with post and wire upper) on roughly 1/3rd of the overall land. Within the fenced area is the cottage with large terrace, two outbuildings; one containing borehole and one for wood, swimming pool (not currently in use) and small established orchard with cherry, almond, pear, apricot, fig, loquat, bay, pomegranate, lemon and tangerine trees. In front of the cottage is roughly the remaining 2/3rds of the land, given over completely to olive trees with some pine and cork oak. The cottage is reached via a good accessible (by car) track from the village, shared with just two other neighbours. There is no through traffic and there are fantastic walks throughout the national park direct from the door where you will see Eagles, Vultures, Hoopoes and all manner of wildlife. In the next village there is a lovely natural river swimming spot with waterfall.

Inside the cottage has a tiled floor throughout and rooms are currently divided up as:

All the land has been worked entirely organically in the last two years and for six years previous to that, was left completely untouched. Wild flowers, green manures, wood chippings and compost have all been sowed/laid throughout the land. All the orchard trees were fruiting this year and the owners pick, preserve and eat the olives themselves. All surrounding land is also organic/natural.

The grey water and toilet system are fed into a soak-away septic tank on the land. Currently there is no running water to the house, but there is a bore-hole already in the pump house which simply requires a solar pump/generator to bring the water up, which is currently clear and plentiful at 35m. The house was previously plumbed into this system and just needs re-connecting. Electricity via a small solar system or generator would, again, provide all necessary power and all the lighting/electric is wired in to the house.

The current owners have never required either water or electric to be connected as they have lived quite happily collecting fresh spring water from the nearby village every few days and are passionate about adopting a more simplified approach to living, enjoying lamplight and the use of hand tools for their handcrafted business.

Satellite Internet would be entirely possible (the neighbours have this), but again, the owners prefer to do without and instead pop to the bar ten minutes down the track where there is wifi available.
