Property Description

This is a unique opportunity to own an authentic Alentejan stone-built cottage in an unspoilt and largely undiscovered area of Portugal. The property lies within the Sao Mamede Natural Park, 1km from the quaint historic town of Alegrete.

The renovated cottage comprises four rooms: Combined kitchen/diner/family room (14.60m2) with tiled floor, wood burning stove, sink, hot water heater, kitchen units, gas (bottled) cooker and fridge. Bedroom 1 can also be used as a lounge and is 13.72m2 with opening windows overlooking the front of the cottage and a linoleum floor. Bedroom 2 is 12.45m2 with a tiled floor and opening window. All windows have shutters and most of the ceilings are cedar-clad. Adjacent to the cottage is the shower-room, with wash hand-basin, bidet and toilet, a utility room and a further room (13.65m2) with a small window which can be used as a third bedroom.

The property covering approx 3,000m2 (just under one acre) still has many original features including the remains of its stone wall boundary and is surrounded by mature forests and wooded areas. Amongst the mature olive trees included with the property are various fruit trees including citrus, apricot, peach, grape and nespera (loquat). The region is famous for its cork oak trees and there are several of these growing amongst the olive trees. Located in its own river valley, the land is suitable for cultivation and organic gardening and is watered naturally via an irrigation channel fed from the small river. A bore hole (which has never run dry in living memory) provides drinking water to the cottage.
Other buildings on the property are the stone ruins of a goat house/pig pen which could be rebuilt, and a separate, weatherproof store.

There is good access to the property off a maintained forest road and electricity and phone connection with good mobile phone reception.
Perfect for outdoor living and entertaining against the sounds of the burbling river and local birdsong, the cottage is completely private but just a 10 minute walk from the pretty hilltop village of Alegrete with its range of small independent shops, bakery, cafes, bars, restaurants, pharmacy, doctor’s surgery, swimming pool and Town Hall with ATM.

Situated south of Portalegre, the village still retains its quaint traditional dwellings, some with distinctive arched doorways especially in the old part of the village which stretches from Largo de Coreto (bandstand) up to the remains of the 14th century castle. From the ramparts of the old castle you have a clear view of the farmland below and the vast Alentejo plains in the distance.
