LEE32: Quinta Rito
3 stone cottages for renovation with 1.2 hectares of land.
Photo Gallery for this property.
1.2 hectares of prime soil with 3 stone cottages, 4 stone pig stables, spring water, 1 well, fruit and olive trees, lots of oak (some old cork trees), grape vines, enclosed by stone walls, borders a stream, 3 terraces, and independent entrance.
The first stone cottage is located at the entrance of the land, it's about 66 m2 and has two separate entrances because at the time it was used as two separate houses. Right next to it, there is what the owner calls "a storage room", it has a really interesting architecture being circular on one side and it covers a surface of 32 m2. The third stone cottage, 35 m2, is the old main house, it has a nice patio with a cement floor and is surrounded by oak and cork trees, far from the other ones, from it you can see the whole property.
The three terraces are loaded with rich black soil, every gardeners dream, and dotted with producing grapevines, orange, persimmon, plum, and apple trees. In addition, there are about 25 olive trees that give roughly 100-150 litres of oil per year. On the second terrace there is an open well, made in stone, complete with the original water crane; close by hiding under the ferns, there is a natural water spring. At the end of the third terrace, flows a stream with centuries old stone walls, which forms one of the four borders. The other three borders are all stone built walls.
The location of Quinta Rito is intriguing. It is at the end of a small grouping of houses and shares a valley of natural beauty, where mature trees both surround and invade the land at the same time. It's rustic stone constructions blend into the nature. A short walk will take you to a grocery store, the local bar, and even to the main square. Electricity, telephone line and municipal water hookups are close by. The area is in what is called "Zona Verde", which means you have permission to expand existing buildings vertically, one floor, and add 10% to the existing surface area.
Quinta Rito was owned by a stone mason. As such, it is littered with small particularities that create it's charm, an old stone bench, little dog/chicken houses, the antique laundry basin, and an old stone water tank close to the main house are examples.
This property has great potential, the mature fruit trees will give you food from the minute you arrive, the fantastic soil will guarantee you a successful garden from the first year and although the cottages require renovation, just a little bit of work would go a long way. The old owners really loved this place, they put a life time of work into this property and it shows.
Quinta Rito, is situated on a sparsely populated foothill of Monsanto. Monsanto is a magical medival village nestled on top of a mountain made of giant granite boulders. One of mother nature's works of art married with centuries of careful and meticulous work by it's inhabitants, Monsanto is well known as Portugal's "most portuguese village". As well as it's beauty, Monsanto also provides facilities such as a bank, pharmacy, health care centre, kindergarten and primary schools, restaurants, bars, a monthly street market, small grocery stores, construction supply, and local tradesmen. In the neighboring village 5 minutes away, Penha Garcia, there is an incredible UNESCO world heritage site famous for its fossils, rock-climbing, natural swimming pool, waterfall and lake. If you keep going in that direction, you'll pass the curing spa waters of Monfortinho, before crossing the border into Spain. 20 minutes in the opposite direction takes you to Idanha-a-Nova, with amenities such as supermarkets, movie theatre, indoor pool, library and museum.
